Localized anti-microbial treatment

Periodontal disease is a progressive chronic inflammatory condition that leads to severe inflammation and tooth loss if left untreated. In certain situations, antibiotic treatment may be used in combination with scaling and root planing or surgery to help reduce bacteria load before and after many common periodontal procedures.

Antibiotics are available in several forms, include oral capsules and localized delivery devices which are applied directly to the gum pocket. Research has provided ample evidence that in some cases of periodontal disease, antibiotic treatment can be an effective adjunctive treatment to traditional mechanical scaling and root planing for pocket reduction.  It is important to remember that antibiotic treatment as a stand-alone treatment is not effective at treating periodontal disease.
