What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are replacement teeth that look and feel just like your own. The implant structure itself is a small biocompatible titanium "root" that is carefully placed in the bone where the tooth is missing. The bone then integrates with the titanium implant creating a strong foundation for the general dentist to restore with a crown, bridge or denture. Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like a natural tooth.

Why Replace a Missing Tooth?

When a tooth is lost, it's best to consider implant replacement as promptly as possible to minimize the negative effects of tooth loss, which includes reduced chewing ability, bone loss and shifting of teeth. After tooth loss, the load on each remaining tooth is increased because there are fewer of them. To restore proper chewing ability, the support lost from the missing tooth needs to be replaced.

Furthermore, implants assist in preserving facial structure by preventing bone deterioration and facial collapse that often occurs when teeth are missing. When teeth are lost, the jawbone degenerates. Nature follows a "use it" or "lose it" phenomenon! Where implants have been properly placed and maintained, the bone will be preserved since it is still in use and function.
